Mauritania opposition rejects calls for third presidential term

Political tension is rising in Mauritania as calls for President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani to serve a third term intensify. Supporters of the president have highlighted his administration's achievements, arguing that a continuation of his leadership is in the national interest.

Opposition leaders, including Biram Dah Abeid, have strongly rejected these calls, asserting that the Constitution limits a president to two terms. Abeid has questioned whether the president will honor his oath to respect the Constitution or attempt to change the rules to remain in power.

While members of the presidential majority suggest it is premature to discuss a third term, some have not ruled out future constitutional reforms to ensure political continuity. President Ghazouani previously stated in a press engagement that he would not act in a manner contrary to the Constitution.
