Mauritania police arrest suspect in child rape case

Mauritanian police have arrested a suspect in connection with the rape of a seven-year-old girl in the Teyenguine district of Nouakchott. Following the arrest, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime and led investigators to the scene after the victim identified him.

The Mauritanian Observatory for Justice and Equality praised the swift police action but strongly condemned the circulation of the victim's image and personal data on social media, calling it a violation of privacy and dignity. The Observatory urged bloggers and journalists to cease sharing identifying information to prevent further psychological harm to the child.

In a separate development, police prevented a planned protest in front of the Presidency in Nouakchott. Organizers had called for the demonstration under the slogan ‘No to Rape, No to Impunity’ to demand stricter penalties for sexual violence against children. Authorities reportedly blocked the gathering at Freedom Square, citing a lack of prior authorization.
