Mauritanian teacher unions announce protests over representation

Educational workers and union groups in Mauritania are organizing protests to address systemic issues and representation rights. The Hadiroun collective, representing 12 union organizations, has announced a sit-in in front of the Ministry of Education and Reform of the Educational System starting Monday, August 31.

Hadiroun claims the ministry is excluding less representative unions and has failed to engage in consensual union elections. The group argues that the ministry has unilaterally announced election procedures and is misinterpreting union representativeness data, which they say ignores the legal rights of smaller unions to defend their members.

In a separate gathering, the Mars Attacks collective met to discuss debt and inequality within the education system. While participants expressed a strong desire for future demonstrations to protect teaching quality and equal opportunity, they noted that no immediate actions are planned for the upcoming week. The collective noted the absence of major unions CSC and CGSP from their meeting, which they had hoped would facilitate joint planning.
