Mauritanian UN representative meets UN envoy regarding Western Sahara

Mauritania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Cheikhna Ould Nene, met with Staffan de Mistura, the UN Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, in New York. The meeting followed a closed Security Council session where de Mistura provided a briefing on recent consultations following the issuance of Resolution 2797 (2025).

The discussions occur amidst ongoing debates regarding the renewal of the mandate for the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). Mauritania remains a participant in the political process alongside Morocco, the Polisario Front, and Algeria.

In previous negotiations, Mauritania has proposed the formation of a committee to reach a consensus on defining the final and permanent international borders of the disputed territory. This proposal aims to address border issues as part of the practical arrangements for any future political settlement.
