Mauritius and Gabon initiate new labor and energy sector studies
The Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations in Mauritius has issued a call for tenders to select a consulting firm to conduct a feasibility study regarding the introduction of a 40-hour work week. Local firms may apply, with the option to partner with international consultants. The official tender process requires submissions by October 26, 2026, with bids opening on October 28. This study is a preparatory step and does not constitute an immediate change to labor legislation or a confirmed implementation date.
In Gabon, the Council of Ministers has authorized the immediate commencement of preliminary studies for the construction of a new oil refinery. This decision follows recent fuel shortages in Libreville and other regions, which were exacerbated by international market disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and structural weaknesses in the national supply system. The country's existing refinery, Sogara, currently has a limited capacity of approximately 1.2 million tonnes per year, which has struggled to meet growing national demand for gasoline, diesel, and kerosene.
