Mauritius asserts sovereignty claims at United Nations
During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Mauritian Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful addressed several critical geopolitical issues, emphasizing that Mauritian sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is ‘non-negotiable’. He cited the May 2025 agreement between Mauritius and the United Kingdom as a successful example of multilateralism and international judicial processes in resolving disputes and completing the decolonization process.
Ramful also addressed the long-standing territorial dispute regarding Tromelin, an uninhabited island in the Indian Ocean currently administered by France. He called on France to resume constructive discussions to reach a settlement, citing the friendship between the two nations. The Tromelin issue has remained stalled for years following the French Parliament's failure to ratify a 2010 co-management agreement.
Beyond territorial disputes, the Minister raised concerns regarding the ability of the UN to address 21st-century realities, specifically noting the risks of developing nations being left behind by technological advancements and the need for better representation within the international financial architecture.
