Mauritius Brauerei files for bankruptcy amid supply concerns

Mauritius Brauerei, a German brewery with over 160 years of history based in Zwickau, has filed for bankruptcy with the Chemnitz district court. The company is a producer of various private-label beers, including the Perlenbacher brand sold by Lidl, as well as brands for Netto and Rewe.

Despite the bankruptcy filing in March 2026, the future of the plant may depend on a potential takeover, with the expected transaction value estimated at at least 3 million euros. Lidl has addressed concerns regarding product availability, stating that deliveries to Poland are currently proceeding without disruption and that customers should not expect shortages of Perlenbacher beer on shelves.

The brewery's financial difficulties reflect a broader crisis in the German brewing industry, where beer sales have seen significant year-on-year declines in Germany and specifically in Saxony.
