Mauritius curfew violation trial moves to defendant testimony
In Mauritius, twelve individuals are facing trial in intermediate court for violating a curfew. The prosecution concluded witness testimonies on Monday, October 19, 2026, during a hearing presided over by Magistrate Shefali Ganoo-Arekion. Nineteen witnesses testified, confirming that disturbances and incidents occurred in the areas where the defendants were apprehended.
During police depositions, several defendants provided justifications for their presence on the streets at night. Some cited personal needs, such as visiting an ATM or going to a bakery, while others claimed medical emergencies or a lack of awareness regarding the curfew regulations. The defendants are scheduled to testify on October 21, followed by closing arguments from the respective legal counsel.
