Mauritius establishes crisis committee amid falling reservoir levels
Mauritius is facing a severe water shortage as the water level in its primary reservoir, Mare-aux-Vacoas, has dropped to 36.6%. In response, the Cabinet has established a crisis committee led by the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities to manage supply based on current reserves and weather forecasts.
The Central Water Authority (CWA) has warned that reserves could fall to 20% by the end of November, potentially leading to stricter water restrictions. Residents are already experiencing limited supply schedules. This crisis highlights a long-standing struggle with water security in the country, despite decades of master plans and infrastructure projects dating back to the early 20th century.
