Mauritius faces education scandals and digital payment failures
Mauritius is grappling with several domestic crises. In the education sector, reports have emerged regarding “ghost teachers” in the East who are reportedly close to those in power and receiving state salaries despite having no students to teach.
Additionally, a significant technical failure recently paralyzed thousands of citizens by interrupting card payments and mobile applications such as Juice and my.t money. The disruption was traced back to a malfunction in MauCAS, the central platform managed by the Bank of Mauritius.
In legal and social news, a police investigation is ongoing regarding a viral video involving the online targeting of a nine-year-old girl. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam revealed in Parliament that a second phone belonging to the victim was discovered within the police force, though the victim's lawyer claims a third device exists and has criticized the investigation's pace.
