Mauritius faces social unrest over water distribution inequalities

Protests have erupted across several regions of Mauritius as residents demand access to potable water. Demonstrations have occurred in areas including Clairfonds, Saint-Paul, Allée-Brillant, Highlands, Hermitage, Mesnil, Camp-Fouquereaux, and Camp-Levieux.

Local residents have engaged in road blockades and tire burnings, leading to police interventions. The unrest is fueled by growing social malaise regarding the distribution of water resources, specifically the perceived disparity between local households and large-scale consumers such as luxury hotels, Smart Cities, and golf courses.

The water crisis coincides with broader economic pressures facing the population, including rising fuel costs, pension changes, inflation, and difficulties accessing housing.
