Mauritius Finance Bill postpones maternity and paternity leave extension to 2027
On 28 July, the Mauritian Prime Minister presented the Finance Bill and the Economic and Financial Measures (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill to the National Assembly. The legislation amends 83 existing laws, continues pension reforms and includes a provision to delay the start of the extended maternity and paternity leave from 1 July 2026 to 1 January 2027, allowing better human‑resource planning.
Both bills will move to the Committee Stage on 31 July, when members will debate further amendments, including changes to the National Pensions Act and the eligibility criteria for the State Age Pension. The Prime Minister stressed that the country faces a choice between a controlled reform now or a severe crisis later.
