Mauritius food importers warn of price hikes due to new clearance fee

Food importers and freight handlers in Mauritius have expressed concern regarding a new Rs 1,000 fee per clearance authorization imposed on food shipments. Introduced by the Ministry of Health and Wellness under the Food Regulations 2024, the levy applies to all food consignments arriving via sea ports and airports.

Authorities stated the measure is intended to strengthen controls over imported food products and improve traceability. However, industry operators warn the fee could lead to increased consumer prices, administrative delays, and financial strain on small businesses, particularly as the Christmas and New Year peak trading period approaches.

Industry representatives noted that businesses may be forced to pass the costs on to retail prices or absorb them within profit margins. Those making frequent imports of small quantities are expected to be hit harder than companies consolidating larger volumes.
