A United Nations commission has approved Mauritius's claim to an extended continental shelf in the Rodrigues region, covering approximately 145,000 to 147,000 km² of seabed and subsoil.

The decision, based on a submission originally lodged in 2009 and finalized following scientific reviews, recognizes the natural prolongation of the Mauritian territory beyond 200 nautical miles. While this approval grants rights to the seabed and its potential resources, such as minerals and fishing grounds, it does not extend the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) or territorial waters.

Former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth described the approval as a turning point for the nation's sovereignty and economic future.
