Mauritius implements new strategies to combat climate change and coastal erosion

Mauritius is implementing new strategic measures to address escalating climate threats, including rising sea levels, droughts, and changing cyclone patterns. The Mauritius Meteorological Services has validated a strategic plan for 2027–2031. Developed under World Meteorological Organization (WMO) guidelines, the plan includes a new focus on capacity building to meet the needs of the government, the private sector, and the public.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the European Union, the French Development Agency (AFD), and Business Mauritius, has launched the “Nou Lakot Pe Rekile: Ki Pou Reste?” initiative to combat coastal erosion. Scientific studies conducted by the BRGM and the University of Limoges indicate that by 2050, coastal retreat could average between 20 and 30 meters in certain regions, increasing the vulnerability of infrastructure and the tourism industry.

To translate these scientific findings into local action, the Centre d’Études pour le Développement Territorial Indo-océanique (CEDTI) is conducting community workshops across Mauritius and Rodrigues to facilitate territorial planning and adaptation.
