Mauritius imposes curfews following water shortage protests

Mauritius has implemented consecutive night-time curfews following violent protests triggered by water shortages and the rising cost of living. The Mauritian Cabinet approved two additional curfews, effective from 20:30 to 05:00 on the nights of October 14-15 and October 15-16, 2026. These restrictions apply to approximately one-third of the territory, including populated areas surrounding the capital, Port-Louis.

Authorities report that 94 arrests have been made since the unrest began, including 16 minors. The violence has resulted in injuries to seven police officers and significant property damage, including the destruction of traffic lights, surveillance cameras, police stations, and public buildings. Some roads have also been blocked, and the sugar industry has been impacted by the burning of 11,000 tonnes of sugarcane.
