Mauritius leads Africa in global capitalism and peace rankings

Mauritius has secured top rankings in two major global indices regarding economic environment and peace. According to the Global Capitalism Index published by the University of Virginia, Mauritius ranks 48th globally and is the highest-rated economy in Africa. The index, which evaluates institutional conditions for markets, private investment, and competition, gives the nation a score of 73.9 points.

Additionally, the 2026 Global Peace Index by the Institute for Economics and Peace ranks Mauritius as the safest nation in Africa for the 19th consecutive year. It holds the 18th position globally with a score of 1.586. While the economic index focuses on market openness and capital flow, the peace index highlights the country's stability through indicators of societal safety and low conflict exposure.
