Mauritius pauses proposed sugar duty expansion on confectionery

The Mauritian government has paused the implementation of a proposed extension to its sugar-related excise duty following concerns over potential price hikes. The measure, included in the 2026–2027 Budget, aimed to expand taxation to a wider range of sweet products, including biscuits, jams, waffles, chewing gum, and fruit jellies.

Industry estimates suggest the tax could lead to significant retail price increases, with some confectionery products potentially becoming up to 245% more expensive. For products already subject to the duty, the proposed rate would increase from 12 sous to 15 sous per gram of sugar. The government has initiated a consultation process to address these concerns before proceeding.
