Mauritius Police and Quebec Drug Trafficking Cases Prompt Arrests

Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam told parliament that 23 police officers have been arrested or suspended for involvement in 18 drug‑trafficking cases spanning from January 2014 to July 2026. Several officers have already been sentenced, including a 15‑year term with a Rs 10,000 fine and another 35‑year term with a Rs 150,000 fine; other cases remain pending. Ramgoolam said the government will review the policy on paying full salaries to officers who are barred from service.

In Quebec, Canada, 59‑year‑old Sylvain Ringuet was arrested on 3 July during a police operation in the Bic area of Rimouski. Police seized more than C$3,500 in cash, approximately 2 kg of cocaine, 1 kg of hashish, assorted cannabis, pills, and 400 contraband cigarettes from the vehicle. Ringuet faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and a bail hearing has been scheduled for 30 July.
