Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam Dismisses Junior Minister Amid Drug Probe

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam removed junior tourism minister Sydney Pierre after Pierre voted against the government's pension amendment, breaking collective responsibility. Ramgoolam said the dismissal was necessary and that he would sign the revocation letter to the President.

At the same time, junior minister Véronique Leu‑Govind remains in office despite the arrest of her husband, Gulshan Govind, in a drug investigation. Police allege Govind conspired to import about 156 kg of cannabis from Réunion and faced additional charges for cannabis cultivation and methadone possession. The court denied his bail, citing risks of recidivism and witness interference. Ramgoolam stressed that no one is above the law and that the investigation is ongoing, while praising the police for their efforts.
