Mauritius, Suriname, and France implement fiscal measures to manage deficits

Several nations are addressing fiscal challenges through new budget projections and deficit management strategies.

In Mauritius, Statistics Mauritius reported a significant widening of the public sector deficit to Rs 76.1 billion for the 2024–2025 financial year, representing 10.6% of GDP. Public spending rose by 20.5%, outpacing a 15.7% increase in revenue. Consequently, public debt reached Rs 570.5 billion, or 79.6% of GDP.

Suriname has presented its 2027 draft budget, with President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons projecting a deficit of SRD 10.8 billion, equivalent to 4% of GDP. The government expects SRD 70.1 billion in revenue against SRD 80.9 billion in expenditures. The administration aims to focus on economic transformation and debt reduction while maintaining macroeconomic stability.

France is working toward fiscal consolidation for its 2027 budget, targeting a public deficit below 5% of GDP. Proposed measures include approximately 43 billion euros in savings and tax increases to manage a debt that could reach 121.7% of GDP. The plan includes freezing certain pensions and limiting departmental credits to reassure financial markets.
