Mauritius recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara as most credible solution
Mauritius has officially changed its position regarding the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, now recognizing autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the “most credible solution.”
Mauritian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Dhananjay Ramful announced the shift during meetings with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Ramful stated that the decision follows a recent Cabinet meeting and the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797. The Mauritian government described the resolution as being “based on pragmatism” and concluded that the autonomy plan offers the “most realistic, fairest, and most sustainable solution” to the regional dispute.
