Mauritius secures UN recognition for 147,000 km² of seabed

The United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf has recognized Mauritius’ entitlement to an extended continental shelf of approximately 147,000 km² around Rodrigues Island. This decision grants the nation sovereign rights over the seabed and subsoil resources in the area, though it does not expand the existing exclusive economic zone (EEZ), which remains at roughly 2.3 million km².

The extension places Mauritius among the top three maritime powers in Africa by total maritime space and seabed rights. The region is noted for its significant mineral potential, including cobalt, zinc, manganese, and massive sulfides.

While the ruling is considered a historic advancement for the nation's future economy and maritime governance, officials noted that exploitation remains a long-term prospect. Future steps will require adapting Mauritian law, establishing management rules, and ensuring marine environmental protection before exploration can begin.
