African financial markets show varying performance in 2026 indices
Recent economic reports and indices highlight a shifting landscape for African financial markets and business integration. The 2026 Absa Africa Financial Markets Index shows South Africa maintaining its top position, followed by Mauritius and Namibia. Notably, Nigeria has slipped to eighth place due to weaknesses in foreign exchange arrangements and market transparency, despite recent reforms. Ghana has improved its standing, moving up to sixth place.
In terms of market conditions, the Global Capitalism Index identifies Mauritius, Seychelles, and Botswana as the most favorable environments for capitalism on the continent. Meanwhile, the Pan-African Trade and Investment Council (PAFTRAC) reports that 81.3% of African business leaders anticipate an increase in cross-border trade over the next year, driven by interest in regional markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Efforts to mobilize capital continue through initiatives like the West African Integration and Investment Summit (WAIIS) in Lagos and the upcoming Africa Financial Summit in Luanda. These forums aim to convert economic potential into bankable investments and competitive industries, addressing the gap between growing financial institution profitability and the need for increased lending to productive sectors and SMEs.
