Mauritius textile industry faces delays after social unrest
The textile export sector in Mauritius is facing significant delays following recent social unrest and curfew restrictions. Industry reports indicate that production dropped by approximately 20% during the period of disruption, with orders being delayed by one week or more due to issues in both air and maritime freight.
Manufacturers faced operational challenges as factories were forced to close early, sometimes as early as 15:00 or 17:00, to ensure staff could return home before curfews. These disruptions have led to increased overtime costs and potential penalties from international buyers.
Nitish Rama, Managing Director of V Formula, noted that the unrest affected multiple stages of the production and shipping supply chains. While companies are working to finalize pending orders and secure upcoming departures, the industry must now manage the logistical repercussions of the recent instability.
