Mauritius tourism market diversifies toward eco-travel and business stays
Mauritius is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape, moving beyond its traditional reputation as a destination for golfers and honeymooners. The island is increasingly positioning itself as an eco-tourism hub, offering activities such as rainforest hikes and dolphin excursions. Luxury resorts, including the Constance Belle Mare Plage, are adapting to these trends by expanding their offerings to include culinary experiences and food festivals.
Economic data indicates a broadening visitor market. Statistics Mauritius reported a record 1.436 million tourists in 2025, a 3.9% increase from the previous year, with gross tourism earnings reaching approximately US$2.2 billion. This growth is accompanied by significant economic diversification, with financial services and the ICT/BPO sectors contributing notably to the GDP.
As the demographic of travelers evolves to include more business professionals, investors, and long-stay visitors, there is rising demand for flexible accommodation. Industry experts note a growing need for purpose-built aparthotels that offer a balance between the independence of local living and the convenience of hotel services, filling a gap between traditional resorts and fragmented short-term rentals.
