Mauritius imposes curfews amid violent unrest and police shooting

Mauritius is experiencing significant civil unrest, described as the worst riots in three decades. The violence was initially sparked by public frustration over water shortages and the rising cost of living, but escalated sharply following a police shooting of 27-year-old Élodie Thomas on October 9.

Protesters have engaged in road blockades using burning tires and debris, attacked police stations, and looted supermarkets. In response, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam has imposed overnight curfews in several regions, including the capital, Port Louis, to restore order. The government has also suspended school operations in various areas.

Authorities have arrested dozens of individuals, including minors, in connection with the disturbances. A police sergeant has been provisionally charged regarding the shooting of Thomas, who underwent successful surgery to remove a bullet. The Prime Minister has condemned the violence and suggested that some unrest may be fueled by drug traffickers. The economic impact is significant, with potential risks to the nation's vital tourism and financial sectors.
