Mauritius vegetable prices fluctuate amid harvest abundance and scarcity

In Mauritius, vegetable prices are showing mixed trends. According to Kailash Ramdharry of the Farmers in Agriculture, Livestock, Cooperative, Organic Network (FALCON), favorable weather and expanded cultivation areas have led to abundant harvests and lower prices for several staples. For instance, the price of carrots has dropped from Rs 25 to between Rs 10 and Rs 15 per half-kilo, while pumpkin prices have also decreased.

However, scarcity in certain crops is driving prices upward. Vegetables such as lalo, voëme, and pipangaille have become difficult to find due to irregular planting, with lalo reaching Rs 225 per half-kilo. Other items like chili and chayote have also seen price increases. Market observers note that upcoming religious fasting periods may further impact demand and pricing.
