Mauritius water reservoirs drop sharply, prompting nationwide supply cuts
The Central Water Authority (CWA) of Mauritius warned of a significant rainfall deficit, with only 37 % of the expected precipitation recorded for the winter season. This shortfall has reduced the Mare aux Vacoas reservoir to about 41 % of its capacity and similarly lowered levels at the Nicolière reservoir, raising concerns that the main storage sites could run dry by September‑October if rains remain insufficient.
In response, the CWA announced that water distribution will be cut by two hours per day across the country starting 5 August 2026. Additional restrictions slated for 10 August include limiting agricultural irrigation to vegetable crops, banning the use of potable water for car washes and high‑pressure cleaning, and prohibiting filling swimming pools. A coordination meeting involving the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, the Water Resources Commission and police will monitor compliance.
The authority urged the public to conserve water to preserve the remaining supplies through the upcoming summer season.
