Mauritius weather alert: High swells and strong winds
A powerful anticyclone located southwest of the Mascarene Islands is bringing windy and cooler weather to Mauritius. The Vacoas meteorological station reports that maximum temperatures will be approximately 3°C below seasonal averages, with highs ranging from 17–20°C on the central plateau and 22–25°C in coastal regions.
South-easterly winds are expected to average between 30 and 40 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. Authorities have advised caution for motorists and those working at heights due to strong crosswinds. Light rain is anticipated on the central plateau and windward slopes.
A heavy swell warning remains in effect until 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 17. South-westerly swells reaching approximately 4 meters are expected to pass the reefs, posing a risk of coastal flooding in low-lying areas, particularly during high tides. The meteorological station strongly advises fishermen, boaters, and the general public to avoid going to sea or visiting beaches.
