Mauritius Wetlands Bill to be introduced in Parliament

Mauritius' Council of Ministers approved on 31 July 2026 the first reading of the Wetlands Bill in the National Assembly. The legislation seeks to protect, conserve and enhance wetlands on both state and privately owned lands, establish management goals for biodiversity and ecosystem services, and align the country with the Ramsar Convention for international wetland sites.

The Bill also integrates ecosystem‑based approaches to disaster risk reduction and climate‑change adaptation, provides a framework for equitable decision‑making, and mandates regular monitoring and reporting on the condition of all wetlands across the Republic of Mauritius.
