Maurizio Landini urges Italian politicians to address real social issues

Maurizio Landini, the general secretary of the CGIL trade union, has called on Italian politicians to move beyond electoral campaigning and focus on solving the practical problems of citizens. Speaking at the Festa nazionale dell’Unità in Reggio Emilia, Landini warned that prioritizing polls and voter numbers over long-term issues risks the country’s stability.

Landini highlighted several critical challenges facing Italy, including an aging population and a skills gap in the workforce. He contested political narratives regarding immigration, noting that more young Italians are leaving the country than foreigners arriving to work.

Furthermore, Landini advocated for a significant tax reform to increase equity. He pointed out a disparity where profits are taxed at 23% while wages and pensions are taxed at 40%, arguing that individuals with equal income should pay the same amount in taxes. He suggested that such reforms could generate necessary revenue to fund investments in healthcare, education, and local infrastructure.
