Mauro Icardi exits Galatasaray as club appoints new captain and reassigns iconic number 9

Mauro Icardi's contract with Galatasaray expired and the Argentine striker left the Turkish club after 134 matches, 77 goals and 25 assists. He said the new offer of €5 million per year – half his previous salary – was unacceptable and expressed disappointment with the club’s management.

Following Icardi’s departure, Galatasaray announced that defender Abdülkerim Bardakcı will serve as the new first‑team captain. Other leaders under consideration include Victor Osimhen, Kaan Ayhan and Yunus Akgün. The club also confirmed that Osimhen will take over the iconic number 9 shirt, with a special merchandise collection planned for fans.

Galatasaray issued a statement praising Icardi’s contributions, emphasizing that his legacy at the club remains valued despite his exit.
