Mauro Mendes backs off on comments about possible STF minister impeachments

Former Mato Grosso governor Mauro Mendes (Union party) was interviewed by Rádio Jovem Pan on Tuesday, 28 May. He said that impeachment of Supreme Federal Court (STF) ministers is theoretically possible, comparing it to past impeachments of presidents, governors and other officials. When directly asked about removing the current STF ministers, Mendes admitted he did not know the procedural details, stating, “I don’t know the processes well,” and called for “courage” from senators and better balance between institutions. Mendes, who has met with STF minister Gilmar Mendes and seeks to keep support from Bolsonaro‑aligned voters, has so far spoken only in general terms about impeaching ministers such as Alexandre de Moraes.
