Mauro Mendes faces investigation over alleged mercury smuggling

A Federal Police investigation into the smuggling of mercury has been sent to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) following allegations that the illegal substance was used by a mining operation linked to former Governor Mauro Mendes. The investigation, part of Operation Hermes HG, found that two mining companies purchased at least 314 kilograms of mercury without authorization from Ibama. Evidence includes audio recordings where individuals allegedly discussed selling illegal mercury to Mineração Aricá, which investigators suspect is owned by Mendes.

Mendes has dismissed the suspicions as “absurd” and criticized the timing of the legal proceedings ahead of the election cycle.

Cuiabá Mayor Abilio Brunini commented on the situation, stating he supports investigations into any suspected irregularities involving public funds, including those involving Mendes. However, Brunini cautioned against the “instrumentalization” of political acts, warning that investigations into past events should not be used to manipulate the electoral process or dominate political narratives.
