Mauro Menéndez’s Barbados death sparks vaping warning from father
DJ Mauro Menéndez, 32, died in Barbados on July 17, 2026 after a severe bout of pneumonia that led to seizures, three heart attacks and clots in his lung and heart. He had traveled to the island for a gig despite being ill, and told his mother, actress Aylín Mujica, in a voice message that he had taken antibiotics and felt better. Hours later his condition worsened and he was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m.
His father, Cuban musician Osamu Menéndez, gave his first public interview since the tragedy, blaming the use of electronic cigarettes for aggravating the illness. He urged young people not to vape, saying, “I know that’s what killed him.” He also expressed anger at his son’s alleged irresponsibility for traveling while sick.
The leaked voice message, broadcast by a Mexican entertainment program, shows Mauro reassuring his mother that he was recovering before the fatal turn. Osamu announced he will not attend any memorial events in the United States, citing the emotional toll of seeing his son’s body in the morgue.
