Mauro Vieira and Marco Rubio agree to bilateral meeting

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a brief conversation during a G20 foreign ministers' reception in Atlanta. The two diplomats agreed to schedule a formal bilateral meeting prior to the G20 summit scheduled for December 14 and 15 in Miami.

The encounter occurs amid diplomatic tensions following the reelection of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The White House has not formally recognized the election results. Additionally, tensions have risen regarding the departure of defeated candidate Flávio Bolsonaro to the United States, despite Brazilian judicial prohibitions on his travel. U.S. Democrats have reportedly questioned the Trump administration regarding potential assistance provided to Bolsonaro during his entry into the country.

During the G20 meetings in Atlanta, which focus on geopolitics, energy markets, and global supply chains, Vieira also held bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of India, the United Kingdom, and Poland. These officials offered congratulations on the conclusion of the Brazilian electoral process.
