Mauro Vieira and Marco Rubio agree to meeting ahead of G20 summit

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on Friday in Atlanta, Georgia, during a G20 ministerial meeting. The two diplomats held a brief conversation and agreed to schedule a formal bilateral meeting before the G20 leaders' summit, which is set to take place in December in Doral, Florida.

The meeting occurs amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Brazil and the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump has questioned the legitimacy of the recent Brazilian elections, suggesting without evidence that fraud occurred, and has not officially recognized Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s reelection.

Relations have been further strained by the departure of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to the United States. Following his electoral defeat, the senator traveled through Argentina to Miami, reportedly with assistance from a White House communications staffer. The U.S. government has granted the senator and his family temporary stay authorization.

Diplomats indicate that the upcoming bilateral meeting will focus on the official agenda between the two nations, including trade tariffs and cooperation against organized crime, rather than the recent political controversies in Brazil.
