Mauthausen Danube bridge construction set for 2028
Construction of the new Danube bridge in Mauthausen is scheduled to begin in autumn 2028 following decades of delays caused by environmental procedures, legal disputes, and political disagreements between states.
Due to the project's timeline shifts, the existing bridge, which opened in 1961, requires extensive renovations. This will result in a complete closure of the current Danube crossing for three months during the summer of 2028, forcing commuters to take significant detours.
The total cost of the project has risen substantially, with current estimates reaching approximately 230 million euros, compared to an initial 2018 estimate of 125 million euros.
