Maverick Mountain ski resort damaged by Sand Creek Fire

The Sand Creek Fire has caused significant damage to Maverick Mountain, an independent ski resort located in Montana’s Pioneer Mountains. The blaze, fueled by dry timber and gusty winds within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, has burned over 27,000 acres and swept through nearly two-thirds of the resort’s runs.

While the fire destroyed a top-station patrol shack and caused extensive damage to the resort’s primary Riblet double chairlift—likely rendering it inoperable for the upcoming winter season—the base area remained largely intact. Firefighters, including hotshot crews and smokejumpers, utilized aerial retardant drops and heavy sprinkler systems to protect the main lodge, base facilities, and nearby Elkhorn Hot Springs.

Resort owner Erik Borge stated that while the mountain has been burned, the community remains intact. The resort is currently assessing the full extent of the damage and is looking toward rebuilding efforts.
