Pol Espargaró steps in for injured Maverick Viñales at British MotoGP

Maverick Viñales will miss the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone because his recovery from a shoulder injury sustained at the Sachsenring in July 2025 has not progressed sufficiently. Medical examinations during the summer break identified a small tear in the infra‑spinatous muscle of his left shoulder, prompting KTM Tech3 to keep him out of the race.

KTM announced that test rider and reserve Pol Espargaró will replace Viñales on the RC16 for the British GP (7‑9 August 2026). The team hopes Viñales can return for the following round in Aragon once his rehabilitation is complete. Viñales has publicly rejected rumours of an early contract termination, stating he will not move to WorldSBK and will finish the season as stipulated in his contract.

The decision was taken after medical consultations and a visit to the Red Bull Athlete Performance Centre, and it aims to preserve the rider’s health while maintaining KTM’s competitive position in the championship.
