Max Arfsten moves from Columbus Crew to Middlesbrough

Columbus Crew have transferred 25‑year‑old midfielder Max Arfsten to English Championship side Middlesbrough FC for a reported fee of $7.5 million, retaining a future sell‑on percentage. Arfsten, a two‑time MLS All‑Star, recorded eight goal contributions (four goals, four assists) in 17 MLS matches this season, his fourth with the Crew.

A first‑round draft pick (14th overall, 2023), Arfsten amassed 20 goals and 21 assists in 114 appearances for Columbus, helping the club capture the 2023 MLS Cup and the 2024 Leagues Cup. Crew general manager Issa Tall praised his versatility and work rate, while Arfsten thanked the club and fans, saying he will always consider himself a member of the Crew. The midfielder also made one appearance for the United States at the recent World Cup, bringing a career total of one goal and five assists in 21 caps.
