Max Larsson sets new Swedish sport fishing record for red morue
Max Larsson has set a new Swedish sport fishing record for the red morue (Coryphaenoides rupestris) after catching a specimen in the depths of the Skagerrak.
On August 26, while participating in a scientific tagging project near the area known as ‘10-gradar’n’, Larsson hooked the fish using a mackerel-baited hook. The specimen measured 84 centimeters in length and 39 centimeters in circumference. Its weight was verified at 2,680 grams, surpassing the previous Swedish record of 2,394 grams set in 2021.
The red morue is a deep-sea species characterized by large eyes and a long, pointed dorsal fin. While not a target for directed sport fishing, the species is known for its long lifespan and late sexual maturity. Historically, populations in the Skagerrak faced significant pressure from commercial fishing, but directed commercial fishing for the species is no longer permitted in the Skagerrak and Kattegat regions.
