Max Planck Institute study identifies regional human fingerprints in climate warming

A study by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, published in Science Advances, demonstrates that the human fingerprint of global warming is detectable in temperature observations across many regions. By analyzing surface temperature data from 1850 to 2022, researchers were able to distinguish long-term external influences from natural climate fluctuations.

The study highlights that the visibility of this human-induced signal varies significantly by geography. In the Arctic, it can take only 10 to 15 years for the human influence to emerge from natural variability. However, in the subpolar North Atlantic and parts of the Southern Ocean, the signal remains difficult to isolate even with data spanning over seven decades.

Researchers found that in most parts of the world, it takes approximately 30 to 35 years for the warming signal to become clearly distinguishable from natural background noise. The findings suggest that natural fluctuations can mask regional warming trends for decades, a phenomenon that some climate models may partially underestimate.
