Max Scherzer delivers dominant performance in potential final MLB start

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer delivered a dominant performance in what may be his final Major League Baseball start, leading his team to a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Rogers Centre. The 42-year-old veteran pitched seven innings on short rest, throwing 114 pitches and recording seven strikeouts.

During the game, Scherzer displayed his characteristic competitiveness by briefly refusing to leave the mound when manager John Schneider attempted to pull him in the seventh inning. Scherzer was eventually removed in the eighth inning following a leadoff walk, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd of 42,131.

While the performance was a highlight for the Blue Jays, Scherzer’s professional future remains uncertain. He has not officially announced his retirement and stated he will wait until the offseason to decide whether to return for the 2027 season. His career totals now sit just three strikeouts shy of tying Justin Verlander for eighth place on the all-time strikeout list.

Additionally, the game marked the final appearance for George Springer under his current contract, who also received a standing ovation from the fans.
