Max Verstappen defends criticism of Formula 1 engine regulations

Max Verstappen has defended his criticisms regarding the current Formula 1 technical regulations, specifically targeting the power units that rely on electrical energy for approximately 50% of their output. The Dutch driver responded to critiques from former drivers, including 1996 World Champion Damon Hill, by suggesting that some commentators do not fully understand how the new regulations and engines function.

Verstappen stated that he is simply expressing his opinion on what he perceives to be flaws in the current system. His concerns regarding the balance of power and the impact on driving dynamics are shared by other drivers like Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso.

Adding weight to these concerns, renowned engine engineer and Ilmor co-founder Mario Illien expressed similar views. Illien noted that the excessive emphasis on electrical energy in the regulations may harm the spectacle of the sport, increase complexity, and raise costs, potentially making the discipline less about pure driving skill.
