FIA's new engine‑compression test hits Mercedes as Verstappen heads to Monaco with a clean record
The FIA has introduced a new procedure for measuring the compression ratio of V6 power units, shifting the test from cold‑engine conditions to a temperature of 130 °C. The change is aimed at closing a loophole that Mercedes was accused of exploiting, where its 2026 engine complies with the 16:1 limit when measured cold but runs at 18:1 when hot. The rule takes effect on 1 June, just before the Monaco Grand Prix, and will require teams to demonstrate compliance under the hotter conditions.
Meanwhile, four‑time world champion Max Verstappen will start the Monaco race with zero penalty points after the three points he earned for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix expired on 1 June. Verstappen avoided further infractions throughout the season, clearing his super‑licence record ahead of the event.
