F1 drivers avoid sanctions following investigations at Zandvoort

During the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix weekend at Zandvoort, FIA stewards conducted several investigations into driver conduct. Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, Lance Stroll, and Valtteri Bottas were investigated for failing to follow race director instructions. Specifically, they were accused of stopping their cars before reaching Safety Car Line 1 during the formation lap. The stewards ultimately decided not to impose penalties, citing that the extremely crowded grid at the narrow Zandvoort circuit made it unsafe for the drivers to proceed further to comply with the rules.

Separately, Carlos Sainz received an official warning for driving unnecessarily slowly during the sprint qualifying. While the stewards acknowledged his explanation regarding energy management and a depleted battery, they concluded he could have managed his time delta more effectively before entering the pit lane. Additionally, Sainz was noted for overtaking Valtteri Bottas before Safety Car Line 1 while entering the pits, but because he was already mandated to start from the pit lane, no further sporting penalty was applied.

On the competitive side, Max Verstappen faced difficulties with car balance and grip, qualifying in 7th position for the main race after a disappointing weekend for Red Bull Racing.
