Max Yasgur provided the site for the Woodstock festival

Max Yasgur, a 49-year-old dairy farmer, provided the essential location for the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. Yasgur owned a 600-acre farm in Bethel, New York, which became the site of the historic festival after organizers faced opposition in Woodstock, Saugerties, and Wallkill.

Despite being a conservative Republican who reportedly supported the Vietnam War—a stance contrary to the festival's counterculture message—Yasgur recognized the opportunity presented by the event. His farm in Sullivan County was home to one of the region's largest milk production operations at the time.

The festival was conceived by Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman, and John P. Roberts. The move to Yasgur's farm followed the passage of a law requiring permits for gatherings exceeding 5,000 people, which had made previous locations unfeasible.
