Maxim De Cuyper reveals near-retirement during youth career
Belgian footballer Maxim De Cuyper revealed in a recent interview that he nearly quit the sport during his youth. While playing for Club Brugge’s U18 squad, the transition from recreational play to a highly serious, professionalized environment caused him to lose interest in the game.
De Cuyper noted that he did not play a single match during his first six months at that level and felt overlooked by coaches. He stated, “I even was on the point of stopping,” noting that the pressure made him lose the joy of playing. He credits his father for convincing him to persevere rather than walking away from his career.
Currently, De Cuyper has seen significant professional success. Now playing for Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, he has recorded one goal and two assists in his first five matches. He has also earned 25 caps for the Belgium national team.
